Department of Mathematics

About the department

The Department of Mathematics trains students, from the Bachelor's to the Master's degree, in analysis, algebra and geometry, and probability and statistics. Its Master's degrees range from mathematical analysis and partial differential equations to applied statistics and statistics of random processes, applied mathematics, mathematics for economics and finance, and algebraic topology and dynamical systems.

What we teach

After the common core and the second year, three Bachelor's specialisations (analysis, algebra and geometry, probability and statistics) lead to eight Master's degrees. Students have computer rooms and a computing centre for practical work and scientific computing.

Practical work and computing facilities

  • Computer rooms D09 and D10
  • Computer rooms B1 and B2
  • Computing centre (7th floor, Tower, Hamani Ahmed Campus)

Our research areas

  • Differential and partial differential equations: nonlinear and fractional problems, boundary value problems, stability and controllability, ill-posed inverse problems, evolution problems.
  • Dynamical systems and chaos: chaos control and synchronisation, chaos-based image and signal encryption, fractals, neural networks.
  • Probability and statistics: inference and estimation, time series and forecasting, stochastic models, statistics applied to epidemiology and industry, financial risk and volatility, experimental design.
  • Numerical analysis, optimisation and mechanics: scientific computing, optimisation and optimal control, metaheuristic methods, variational inequalities and contact mechanics.
  • Algebra and topology: algebraic topology, homological invariants, fixed point theory, inequalities.

Fields of interest

  • Applied mathematics in technology
  • Applied mathematics in biology and medicine
  • Pure mathematics
  • Didactics and teaching methodology

Our strengths

  • Research laboratories covering analysis, modelling, statistics and decision science.
  • A range of Master's degrees seldom found within a single department, from the most fundamental to the most applied (finance, statistics, applied mathematics).
  • Applications in technology, biology and medicine, alongside pure mathematics and didactics.
  • Career opportunities in banks, management and transport companies and hospitals.

Research projects (2024 information sheet)

  • Mathematical study and numerical treatment for solving certain problems in applied sciences.
  • Mathematical concepts and advanced techniques for machine learning.
  • Algebraic methods for constructing experimental designs and applications in the experimental sciences.
  • Statistical models and methods applied to epidemiology and industry.
  • Statistical inference in modelling.
  • Ill-posed inverse problems: study, regularisation and applications.
  • Nonparametric estimation and forecasting.
  • Processing of functional and censored data.
  • Analysis of certain dynamical systems.
  • Study and analysis of an electro-viscoelastic problem with friction.
  • Nonlocal evolution problems.
  • Regularisation and regularity with defect for certain classes of boundary value problems.
  • Non-classical boundary value problems and applications.
  • Study of certain inverse problems for partial differential equations.
  • Study of a class of ill-posed problems.
  • Statistical analysis of experimental data.
  • Analysis of repeated measurements: various applications in physics and medicine.
  • Study of some integral inequalities and their applications.
  • Bayesian designs in clinical trials.
  • Variational study of some problems in contact mechanics.
