Department of Chemistry

About the department

The Department of Chemistry trains chemists, from the Bachelor's to the Master's degree, in the main branches of the discipline: organic, analytical, inorganic and pharmaceutical chemistry, with environmental and water chemistry added at Master's level. Students enter through the Matter Sciences common core and follow the Chemistry pathway from their second year.

What we teach

After the common core, the Bachelor's degree offers four specialisations (organic, analytical, pharmaceutical and inorganic chemistry), continued by the corresponding Master's degrees. Training gives a large place to practice: ten teaching laboratories are reserved for practical work.

Practical work

  • General chemistry (1st and 2nd years)
  • Organic chemistry (L3, M1, M2)
  • Electrochemistry (L3, M1, M2)
  • Thermodynamics (L3, M1, M2)
  • Pharmaceutical chemistry (L3, M1, M2)
  • Analytical chemistry (L3, M1, M2)
  • Inorganic chemistry (L3, M1, M2)

Our research areas

  • Phytochemistry and valorisation of the Algerian flora: medicinal and aromatic plants, essential oils, bioactive molecules, antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
  • Organic synthesis and molecules of biological interest: heterocycles, multicomponent reactions, green chemistry.
  • Crystal chemistry and materials chemistry: crystal structures and molecular interactions, metal complexes, hybrid and molecular materials, metal-organic frameworks, materials for nonlinear optics.
  • Environmental chemistry and water treatment: photocatalysis (TiO2), advanced oxidation, adsorption and biosorption, nanomaterials for depollution, fate of pollutants, wastewater reuse.
  • Corrosion and corrosion inhibitors; theoretical chemistry and modelling (DFT).

Fields of interest

  • Development of syntheses and biological evaluation of new molecules
  • Phytochemistry and valorisation of the Algerian flora
  • Environmental chemistry
  • Materials chemistry

Our strengths

  • Research laboratories covering all of these areas, from synthesis to structural characterisation, from analysis to the environment.
  • A large scientific output, widely cited in international journals (see “The department in figures”).
  • Training in which every specialisation relies on dedicated practical work.
  • Links with industry: end-of-studies placements at Bachelor's and Master's level with SAIDAL.
